Dufftown Cancer Research 25th Anniversary

Dufftown Cancer Research celebrated its 25th anniversary on Sunday 11 May and proud of the achievement of raising over £250,000.

Opening the celebration was a speech by Chairman Ian Ross who introduced Sarah Johnston, Fund Manager with Cancer Research UK who provided an insight into the huge leaps that scientists have made over the past 25 years in improved life expectancy, treatments and the aim that not too far in the future a cure will be found.

Sarah was followed by Mrs Claire Russell, Lord-Lieutenant of Banffshire who thanked the committee, supporters and people of Dufftown and presented the group with a cheque from proceeds of royalties from her latest book and closed her speech adding “Dufftown the people of Banffshire are extremely proud of you”.

There followed presentations to members of the committee – Sandra, Libby, Jim and Betty for 25 years service and Ian Ross for 10 years service.  The organisation was also presented with a Certificate of Achievement from Cancer Research UK.

To celebrate the 25 years Jim and Betty Grant, the oldest members of the committee who have celebrated 60 years of marriage, cut the celebration cake. Afterwards everyone enjoyed a delicious cream tea.

2014 Bike Challenge Sunday 21st September

This bike ride takes place on Sunday 21st September at 9.30am leaving from the Dufftown British Legion and is designed for the moderately fit and the super fit. The long ride is a great test for the keen offroader.

The first section runs from Dufftown up the Cabrach road to the entrance of Glenfiddich estate then over the rough landrover roads through the beautiful middle glen following the river Fiddich to the Suie where hot drinks and biscuits await. There is a good 2km downhill to this point. Then the rider follows the Livet though burns and undulations to Allan Reid carpark. A few hundred yards on the Tombae road leads to the first choice of route. Those who have a taste for more off road challenges can cycle up the Cairn Mulldonich forestry road to the top end of Glen Rinnes back road ( this is a fair challenge). Others may prefer to follow the tar road down Glenrinnes back to Dufftown.

For those reaching the Beatshach junction after the first cut off time there is the option of the route through the Convals back to Dufftown. The enthusiast group can use this route or go back down the tar road.

Cyclists can follow the route that suits them best on the day simply by telling the marshals at the checkpoints which way they are going. The ride can be anything from a mixed off road/tar road day out to a very challenging off road race and all stages in between. Ladies in their 60s on hybrid bikes and adrenaline junkies on full suspension bikes will all find something to suit them.

There is an entry fee of £25 and sponsorship forms are available. Please contact me if you would like a sponsorship form.

Please check out the map of the route and then download the entry form which you can email back to me. I look forward to hearing from you all.
